Albert Renger-Patzsch was a German photographer associated with the New Objectivity. Renger-Patzsch believed that the value of photography was in its ability to reproduce the texture of reality which he achieved through his photographs which were characterised stylistically through their precise objectivity and formal sharpness. Although at the time there was no colour in photographs, this worked in his favour as I believed colour would distract the focal point of the image and away from the simple black and white structures of objective forms.
The image on the left, depicts the natural form of a leaf. the close up view captures the detailed ridges and a skeleton like structure. similarly on the right, the manmade building has similar ribbed aspects. These two objects contrast greatly in size and strength. the leaf being weak, small and dainty and the huge, tall and strong building. these photos depict the complex design of nature and the simplicity of man made objects.
there is a contrast in both images, where in the right photo, the background of the light sky contrasts with the shadows of the dark building. the left image works in reverse to this, the background being much darker and the main element being the lighter focused.
Both images have different contrast in black and whites, the skylight of the image on the right has a yellow tint to it whereas the leaf has a pure white colour.
There isn’t much symmetry in the leaf photo where as the building is composed in a way where the other buildings Frame the image and the main building in the middle.
